Graduation Class of 2024

  • The Class of 2024 Commencement ceremony is scheduled for Friday, May 17th. Seniors are to be at Northern Illinois University no later than 5:15 p.m.  There will not be transportation to or from NIU – it is the student’s responsibility to be there on time.

Appropriate dress for commencement is required. Dresses, dress pants, collared shirts, button downs, blouses, skirts, ties, suits, etc. are expected. Informal dress such as shorts, t-shirts, tank tops, sneakers, bare feet, etc. are  not appropriate.  Students not dressed appropriately will not be allowed to participate in the ceremony and will be sent home.

Caps and gowns are an integral part of appropriate attire and should not be defaced with tape, badges, or signs.  Only cords, sashes, pins, or tassels given by the school can be worn during the ceremony.  Any additional regalia outside of those presented to the graduate by Yorkville High School cannot be worn during the ceremony.  Confiscated items will be returned to students after the ceremony.

Appropriate behavior by graduates is expected throughout the ceremony.  Failure to demonstrate appropriate behavior could result in removal from the ceremony and/or a delay in receiving a diploma.

If students participate, diplomas may be picked up immediately following the ceremony in the downstairs auxiliary gym. Diplomas not picked up on the day of commencement will be available in the YHS main office beginning Monday, May 20th.  Diplomas will not be mailed.

Families will have the opportunity to take pictures of the graduates in their cap and gown immediately following the commencement ceremony, but after the graduates have picked up their diploma.

Parents/Guardians of seniors who are participating in commencement should be aware of the following:

All graduates are to arrive at Northern Illinois University no later than 5:15 p.m.  Their ride to and from the Convocation Center will be a graduate’s  responsibility.  Following is the NIU website for directions and parking (https://convocenter.niu.edu/).

Kabance Photo Services (www.kabancephoto.com) will photograph the ceremony.  Graduates will receive order information directly from Kabance.

Parents will park in lot C2 or C3 at the Convocation Center.  Please come in the main entrance off Rt. 38 and follow directions from NIU parking staff. There is substantial accessible parking at the Convocation Center (Lot C4) – no special arrangements will need to be made.  Once inside, there are areas marked off for accessible seating. Please notify an usher of your needs and they will be able to assist guests.

Parental behavior sets an example for our graduates. Our hope is that each graduate’s name is heard.  NIU will not allow noisemakers of any kind, balloons, balls, etc. into the Convocation Center. Be prepared to have bags/purses searched by security upon entering the Convocation Center. Any inappropriate items will be confiscated and held at guest services until after the ceremony. We appreciate guests’ cooperation in recognizing our students in an appropriate manner.

Don’t forget to purchase a Legacy Brick for your graduate:

The 2024 Legacy Bricks, with personalized messages, are set to be installed in the summer of 2024 at the corners of the main entrance sidewalk of Yorkville High School where a beautiful focal point with two sitting walls welcomes all who visit. This opportunity is a timeless way to honor Yorkville families, graduates, parents, alumni, faculty members, businesses, and friends. A brick makes a great gift and enshrines a lasting memory for generations to come.

Bricks are available in two sizes: 4x8" and 8x8". The bricks are engraved using state-of-the-art laser technology and will last longer than a lifetime. All proceeds benefit the Yorkville Educational Foundation (YEF) to continue its mission in supporting Yorkville CUSD 115 through fundraising support.
