Boy playing French Horn

Elementary Music

  • The elementary music program strives to provide students the opportunity to grow as young musicians as well as develop an awareness and appreciation of the arts. Those in District 115 believe that all students should have an arts education and the ability to create, feel, and inspire through music.

Students in general music participate in one grade level performance each year.

    Band (Grades 5-6)

Fifth- and sixth-grade band is the perfect introduction to playing an instrument in a school setting. Performing in four/five concerts a year, the class focuses on fundamental instrumental concepts such as new music vocabulary, note and rhythm reading, and instrument care. Band instruments taught in this class include flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, saxophone, trumpet, horn, trombone, euphonium, tuba, and percussion. In order to be as successful, there is an outside of school practice requirement. Fifth- and sixth-grade band is a recommended prerequisite for middle school band.

    Orchestra (6th Grade)

Students in 5th and 6th grade orchestra will further explore fundamental note and rhythm reading skills, instrument care, and practice strategies as applied to a string instrument. Focusing on violin, viola, cello, and double bass, we place an emphasis on intonation, technique, and musicality. In orchestra we work together as a team, building strong relationships and social skills in order to create well-rounded individuals. We perform four to five concerts during the school year.

    Choir (Grades 5-6)

Choir primarily focuses on developing and strengthening the singing voice. We work on vocal technique, increasing vocal range, singing in harmony, memory skills, music reading, sight singing, teamwork, and building confidence. Singing in a group heightens the mood of the singer, reduces stress, and can even boost the immune system! Students in 6th Grade Choir perform four or more concerts a year.
